Hope in Action - join in to make a difference

For more than 75 years Christian Aid has provided humanitarian relief and long-term development support for poor communities worldwide while tackling the root causes of poverty and speaking out against injustice. Christian Aid helps those in need, of all faiths and none, motivated by Jesus instruction to love our neighbours and not ignore the suffering of others.

To raise awareness of the need for climate justice Christian Aid shares the stories of people living in countries affected by climate change to develop our understanding of how it impacts their lives and communities. 

Global warming means that the weather has become more extreme and unpredictable. Storms, drought and flooding in many parts of the world mean that millions go short of food and lives, livelihoods and land are lost and damaged.

The huge injustice is that communities who have had the least to do with causing the climate crisis are suffering the most. Industrialisation and heavy use of coal, oil and gas has made some countries rich while also creating high levels of carbon emissions causing global warming and climate change. Responsibility now rests upon the richer nations and fossil fuel companies to make good the damage that has been done.

At the United Nations climate talks last year governments agreed to create a loss and damage fund. Through this fund countries and polluters that have done the most to cause the climate crisis could provide resources to enable climate vulnerable communities to recover when disasters strike and compensate for loss and damage caused.

Public pressure can have a very positive impact on governmental decision making. We can choose to stand in solidarity with climate vulnerable communities and call on decision makers to implement the loss and damage fund without delay. 

Why should those who’ve done the least to cause climate change pay for loss and damage caused by it? It’s time the polluters paid.

A Prayer from Africa

We have seen the droughts and prayed for rain. We have seen the floods and prayed that the rains relent. We have seen the storm, the hurricane and the typhoon and prayed for mercy. Now we understand that the climate crisis is driven by human action we pray for justice. We pray for the nations and corporations that have become rich through the exploitation of fossil fuels. We pray that you will move hearts and inspire actions; that there would be commitment to paying into an international fund to repair the damage and make good the losses. And we pray for ourselves; that our prayers would not cease until justice rolls on like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream.  Amen.
